PRESIDENT: THE CLASSIC SHEDDING & SOCIAL CLIMBING CARD GAME

GAME OVERVIEW

President (also widely known across different regions, campuses, and social clubs by names such as Scum, Capitalism, Asshole, or Landlord) is one of the most wildly entertaining, highly dynamic, and socio-strategically engaging card games ever devised. Designed for 4 to 8 players, this shedding-style card game replaces traditional point-scoring systems with an ever-shifting hierarchy of social ranks.

Unlike conventional card games where each hand resets the baseline for all participants, President carries the consequences—and rewards—of your performance in one round directly into the next. The first player to clear their hand of all cards ascends to the coveted throne of the President, gaining structural and systemic advantages that make retaining power easier. Conversely, the last player left holding cards is relegated to the bottom of the ladder as the Scum (or Scullery Maid), forced to perform menial tasks, deal the cards, and surrender their best resources to the ruling class.

Set around a standard 52-card deck (often supplemented with Jokers for larger groups), President is a game of tempo management, strategic hand preservation, calculated aggression, and cutthroat card shedding. Players must constantly analyze the room, read their opponents' holdings, decide when to assert dominance by taking control of the table, and know when to play passably to survive another day.

Whether played casually around a kitchen table or competitively over hours of non-stop rounds, President delivers an addictively fun balance of strategic card play, shifting power dynamics, and lighthearted social banter that keeps players returning to overthrow the ruling elite.

KEY FEATURES & GAME MECHANICS

1. The Dynamic Hierarchy & Feudal Hierarchy Mechanics

The defining characteristic of President is its persistent social ranking system, established at the conclusion of each round and applied to the start of the next:

  • The President (First Place): The supreme ruler of the table. Collects the highest structural advantages, leads the first trick of the new round, and receives the single best card from the lowest-ranking player.
  • The Vice-President (Second Place): The second-in-command. Enjoys mild privileges, including receiving the second-best card from the second-lowest-ranking player.
  • The High Middle / Citizens (Middle Positions): Neutral positions with no tax obligations or card benefits. They play standard hands and aim to break into the upper echelon.
  • The Vice-Scum (Second-to-Last Place): Suffers minor penalties, including giving their best card to the Vice-President in exchange for a useless low card.
  • The Scum / Asshole (Last Place): The bottom tier. Responsible for gathering, shuffling, and dealing all cards, tidying the discard pile, and surrendering their absolute two best cards to the President at the start of every hand.

2. Card Taxing & Royal Feudal Swaps

Before a new round officially begins, mandatory card taxes must be paid to reflect the hierarchy:

  • The Scum must hand over their two highest-value cards to the President.
  • The President selects any two unwanted cards from their hand and gives them back to the Scum.
  • The Vice-Scum hands over their one highest-value card to the Vice-President.
  • The Vice-President selects any one unwanted card from their hand and gives it back to the Vice-Scum.

3. Clear-Outs & Power Spikes

Certain card combinations and specific values possess special mechanics that instantly clear the active trick from the board, granting the player who played them immediate control over the next lead:

  • The Power of Twos: 2s act as the absolute highest single cards in the standard deck. Playing a single 2 instantly "burns" (clears) the current pile.
  • Four-of-a-Kind Clears: Playing a complete set of four cards of the same rank (e.g., four 8s placed sequentially or played at once) immediately burns the pile.
  • Jokers (Optional Wilds): When included, Jokers beat 2s and act as instantaneous, unchallengeable pile clears.

CARD HIERARCHY & RANKING SYSTEM

The card ranking in President differs significantly from standard poker or bridge. The 2 is elevated to the supreme position, making 3 the lowest possible card in the deck.

Rank (Highest to Lowest) Card / Set Tactical Power & Utility
1st (Absolute Highest) Joker (If played) Instant Pile Clear / Universal Wildcard
2nd 2 (Two) High Single / Instant Pile Clear
3rd Ace (A) High Structural Power
4th King (K) Strong Lead / Capture Card
5th Queen (Q) Solid Upper-Tier Shedding
6th Jack (J) Mid-to-High Board Control
7th through 12th 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 Standard Sequence Builders
13th (Absolute Lowest) 3 (Three) Lowest Value / Hardest to Shed

Note: Suits (Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs) hold no intrinsic value in standard President. A 7 of Clubs is completely equal in rank to a 7 of Hearts.

GAME MODES & REGIONAL VARIATIONS

  1. Standard Feudal (Classic 4 to 6 Players): Uses a single 52-card deck without Jokers. Highly balanced, fast-paced gameplay where card tracking is paramount.
  2. Chaos Rules (With Jokers & Special Cards): Includes two Jokers as supreme cards. Introduces special effects such as "Reverse" (playing a 10 changes directional order) or "Skips" (playing an matching rank skips the next player).
  3. Revolution Variant: If any player plays a set of four matching cards at once, a "Revolution" is declared! For the remainder of the round, the card hierarchy is completely inverted: 3s become the highest cards and Aces/2s become the lowest.
  4. Equal-Match Compression (Fast-Shedding Mode): Allows players to match the value of the currently played card (e.g., playing a 7 on top of a 7), which skips the immediate next player's turn.

HOW TO PLAY: OPERATOR'S MANUAL

1. Core Objective & Winning Conditions

The ultimate goal in President is to empty your hand of all cards as quickly as possible. The order in which players shed all their cards determines their title, rank, and seat privileges for the subsequent round.

Hand Completion Sequence

A player's active participation in a round ends the moment their final card touches the pile:

$$\text{Finish Order} \longrightarrow \begin{cases} \text{1st Finisher} & = \text{President} \ \text{2nd Finisher} & = \text{Vice-President} \ \text{Middle Finishers} & = \text{Citizens / Neutral} \ \text{2nd-to-Last Finisher} & = \text{Vice-Scum} \ \text{Last Finisher} & = \text{Scum} \end{cases}$$

2. Game Setup & Initial Deal

  1. Establish the Initial Hierarchy: In the very first round, ranks have not yet been assigned. Deal the deck out completely. The first player to shed all cards becomes the first President, establishing the structure for round two.
  2. Assign Physical Seating: From round two onward, players physically change seats to reflect their rank! The President selects the most comfortable seat, followed by the Vice-President on their left, Citizens next, and the Scum sitting at the far end (responsible for handling the deck).
  3. The Card Tax Phase: The Scum shuffles and deals all cards face-down clockwise until the deck is fully distributed. The Scum then passes their top two best cards to the President, and the Vice-Scum passes their best card to the Vice-President. The upper class completes the trade by returning an equal number of unwanted low-value cards.

3. Step-by-Step Round Execution

Step 1: The Lead

The President opens the round by playing any single card or matching set of identical cards (e.g., a single 5, a pair of 8s, or three Jacks) face-up into the center of the table.

Step 2: Following the Lead Pattern

Play proceeds clockwise. Each subsequent player must either play or pass:

  • Matching Set Size: A player must match the exact number of cards led. If the leader plays a pair of 6s, all subsequent players must play a pair of equal or higher value (e.g., a pair of 9s or a pair of Kings). Single cards must be met with higher single cards; triplets with higher triplets.
  • Value Rule: To play, your card(s) must be equal to or higher in rank than the card(s) currently sitting on top of the pile.

Step 3: Passing Mechanics

If a player cannot or chooses not to play on their turn, they say "Pass."

  • Passing does not eliminate a player from the entire round. It merely skips their turn for the current trick.
  • Once a card or set is played and all other active players consecutively pass, the trick is finished. The active pile is "cleared" to the burn heap, and the last player who made a valid play gets to lead a fresh new trick with any card or set combination they desire!

Step 4: Burning the Pile

A trick ends instantly—clearing the board immediately—whenever:

  • A player plays a 2 (or Joker).
  • A complete sequence of four matching ranks is completed on the pile.
  • All other players pass consecutively after a play.

The player who executed the burn instantly earns the right to open the next trick with a new lead.

SCORING & TALLY MATRIX (FOR MULTI-ROUND MATCHES)

When playing President over a series of tracked competitive rounds, assign points at the end of each hand based on final placements:

Final Placement Title Achieved Points Earned Per Hand Privileges / Obligations
1st Place President +4 Points Leads 1st Trick; Receives 2 Best Cards from Scum
2nd Place Vice-President +3 Points Receives 1 Best Card from Vice-Scum
3rd Place Citizen / High Neutral +2 Points No tax obligations; neutral positioning
4th Place Citizen / Low Neutral +1 Point No tax obligations; neutral positioning
5th Place Vice-Scum 0 Points Taxed 1 Best Card to Vice-President
6th Place Scum 0 Points Taxed 2 Best Cards to President; Deals Cards

Victory Condition: The player with the highest accumulated points after 10 full rounds is crowned the Supreme Ruler.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS & TABLE SETUP

  • Players Required: 4 to 8 players (4 to 6 is optimal for single-deck play).
  • Equipment Needed: 1 Standard 52-Card Deck (Add 2 Jokers for 6+ players; add a second shuffled deck for 7+ players).
  • Play Surface: Flat table with clear central space for the active trick pile and a designated burn pile.
  • Game Duration: 5 to 10 minutes per individual hand; 45 to 60 minutes for a complete multi-round tournament session.

PRO-TIPS & ADVANCED TACTICAL STRATEGIES

1. Protect Your Control Cards (Twos and Aces)

Do not waste your 2s early on low-value single tricks unless it guarantees you the lead to shed a massive clutter of low-ranking cards. A 2 is your ultimate exit ticket; save it to regain control of the board when you are ready to dump your weak holdings (like single 3s or 4s).

2. Ditch Multiple Sets First

It is significantly harder to lead or clear pairs and triplets than single cards. Whenever you earn the right to lead a new trick, prioritize playing your pairs, triplets, or quadruples first. It is much easier to sneak single low cards onto other players' tricks late in the hand than it is to dump an isolated pair of 4s.

3. The "Scum-Trap" Pass

If you hold a strong hand with high control cards, consider passing early on a trick even if you have a valid card to play. By holding back and letting lower-ranking players exhaust their mid-tier cards, you can sweep in late with a high card, burn the pile, and take full control of the remaining round.

4. Manage Your Card Tax Wisely (President Strategy)

As the President, when returning two unwanted cards to the Scum during the tax phase, do not simply give them your lowest numerical cards if those cards form a natural pair or triplet in your hand! Keep pairs together whenever possible, and hand over isolated, mismatched low single cards (such as a stray 3 and a stray 5) to maximize your hand efficiency.
