Magic Memory

Executive Overview

Magic Memory: Chronicles of the Arcane Mind is an immersive, high-fantasy memory-matching and tactical spell-casting card game designed for 1 to 4 players. Bridging classic spatial memory mechanics with deep deck-building, elemental synergies, and strategic role-playing elements, Magic Memory elevates the timeless card-flipping premise into a high-stakes duel of wits, focus, and arcane mastery.

In Magic Memory, players take on the roles of Archmages competing in the trial of the Aetherial Labyrinth—a shifting interdimensional void where knowledge is fluid, spells are dormant until remembered, and a single lapse in focus can lead to total mana exhaustion. To triumph, you must uncover matching ancient runes, weave powerful spell chains, summon mythic guardians, and outsmart rival mages in a dynamic race to absorb the supreme Aether Core.

Game Lore & Setting

For ten thousand years, the Great Spire of Sol-Aethel stood as the pinnacle of cosmic wisdom. Within its translucent crystal walls, ancient scholars encoded the entirety of elemental reality into Aether Runes—physical manifestations of flame, tide, earth, storm, light, shadow, and time.

When the Nexus Cataclysm fractured the Spire, these runes scattered across the Shifting Veil, a chaotic realm where physical matter fades and only mental acuity retains shape. The runes lie face down in a vast, flickering grid known as the Arcane Grid.

As an Archmage summoned to the trial, your power is directly proportional to your memory. The spells you cast do not exist in a written book; they exist only in the fleeting flashes of insight you glean as the grid unfolds before you. If you recall where the fire rune lies, you may pair it to unleash a scorching inferno. If you lose concentration, your opponents will turn your own uncovered discoveries against you.

Core Game Components

A standard boxed set of Magic Memory includes the following premium components:

  1. 100 Heavyweight Aether Rune Tiles (The Arcane Grid):

    • 7 Element Types (12 pairs each = 84 tiles): Pyromancy (Fire), Hydromancy (Water), Geomancy (Earth), Electromancy (Lightning), Lumancy (Light), Umbramancy (Shadow), and Chronomancy (Time).
    • 8 Special Artifact Pair Tiles (16 tiles total): Unique game-altering items like the Mirror of Foresight, Grimoire of Erasure, Aether Hourglass, and Staff of Unmaking.
  2. 4 Player Archmage Dashboards:

    • Custom dual-layer player boards tracking Health Points (HP), Mana Capacity (MP), Arcane Focus, and Active Deck Slots.
  3. 40 Master Spell Cards:

    • Powerful endgame abilities triggered when specific rune combinations are matched and consumed from a player’s personal vault.
  4. 20 Mythic Guardian Cards:

    • Ancient entities guarding the Grid that players can fight or tame upon matching rare guardian runes.
  5. 60 Custom Mana & Status Tokens:

    • Acrylic tokens tracking Stun, Burn, Freeze, Blind, Silence, and Shield effects.
  6. 1 Four-Sided Elemental Counter Die (d4) & 1 Twelve-Sided Fate Die (d12).

Game Setup

  1. Prepare the Arcane Grid:

    • Take the 100 Aether Rune Tiles and thoroughly shuffle them face down.
    • Arrange the tiles into a 10x10 square grid in the center of the play area. Ensure equal spacing between all tiles so no physical markers give away tile identities.
  2. Select Archmage & Setup Dashboard:

    • Each player chooses an Archmage character card (e.g., Ignis the Flamebinder, Vespera the Shadow Weaver, Zephyr the Timebender, or Terra the Earthwarden).
    • Set your HP tracker to 100 and your starting Mana (MP) to 10. Place your character dashboard in front of you.
  3. Draft Starting Spell Cards:

    • Deal 3 basic Spell Cards face up to each player. These represent beginner spells that can be activated whenever matching elemental pairs are claimed during gameplay.
  4. Determine Starting Player:

    • Roll the d12 Fate Die. The player with the highest roll takes the Arcane Prism Token and takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.

How to Play: Rules & Turn Structure

Magic Memory is played over a series of rounds consisting of individual player turns. A player's turn is divided into three consecutive phases: The Focus Phase, The Revelation Phase, and The Resolution Phase.

Phase 1: The Focus Phase

At the beginning of your turn:

  • Gain +2 Mana (MP) up to your maximum capacity.
  • Cleanse or apply ticks for any active status effects (e.g., if you are Frozen, you must pay 3 MP to act, or lose your Revelation Phase).
  • Option to play 1 Pre-Turn Artifact Card or activate an Archmage passive ability.

Phase 2: The Revelation Phase

This is the core memory mechanic of the game.

  1. First Flip: Select any single closed tile on the Arcane Grid and flip it face up so all players can see its symbol, element, and numerical value.
  2. Second Flip: Select a second closed tile on the Arcane Grid and flip it face up.
  3. Compare Tiles:
    • If the Tiles Match: You have successfully formed an Arcane Pair! You immediately collect both tiles into your personal Vault (placed beside your dashboard). You earn Mana equal to the rune's printed value and gain an Extra Turn (up to a maximum of 3 consecutive turns per round).
    • If the Tiles Do Not Match:
      • All players are given 5 seconds to observe and memorize the positions and symbols of both flipped tiles.
      • Turn both tiles back face down in their exact same grid positions.
      • Your turn ends immediately, and play passes to the next player.

Phase 3: The Resolution Phase (Triggered Upon Successful Matches)

When you successfully match a pair of tiles during the Revelation Phase, you do not just hoard points—you harness raw magical energy! You may immediately perform one or more of the following actions during your Resolution Phase:

1. Weave an Elemental Spell

Every elemental pair has an inherent spell effect that auto-triggers upon collection:

  • Pyromancy Pair (Fire): Deal 15 direct damage to an opponent of your choice.
  • Hydromancy Pair (Water): Restore 15 Health Points (HP) to yourself or an ally.
  • Geomancy Pair (Earth): Gain a 20 HP Shield block against incoming damage.
  • Electromancy Pair (Lightning): Force an opponent to immediately discard 1 stored tile from their Vault back onto the Grid face down.
  • Lumancy Pair (Light): Peek at any 2 adjacent face-down tiles on the Grid without revealing them to rivals.
  • Umbramancy Pair (Shadow): Blind an opponent—they must play their next turn with 1 blind tile turn choice chosen at random by a rival.
  • Chronomancy Pair (Time): Take an additional free tile reveal without risking a miss penalty.

2. Channel Combined Arcane Sets

If you hold multiple pairs in your Vault, you can spend them (returning them to the box) to cast grand Master Spells from your hand:

  • Triple Fire Match: Cast Meteor Strike — Deals 40 damage to all opponents and rearranges 4 face-down tiles on the Grid.
  • Light + Shadow Match: Cast Eclipse — Steal one matching pair directly from an opponent’s Vault.
  • Water + Earth + Lightning Match: Cast Elemental Tempest — Freeze all opponents for 1 full turn cycle.

Special Grid Features & Advanced Mechanics

To elevate gameplay beyond basic memory, Magic Memory introduces interactive layer events that keep all players engaged even when it is not their turn.

1. The Shifting Grid (Chrono-Shift)

Whenever 5 pairs are matched anywhere on the board, the Shifting Grid mechanic activates. The player holding the Arcane Prism Token rolls the d4 Elemental Counter Die and performs a grid modification based on the roll:

  • 1 - Shift Row: Slide an entire horizontal row of face-down tiles one space to the right.
  • 2 - Rotate Quadrant: Rotate a 3x3 section of face-down tiles 90 degrees clockwise.
  • 3 - Swap Core: Swap the position of 2 corner tiles with 2 center tiles.
  • 4 - Chaos Flash: Briefly flip 4 random tiles face up for 3 seconds, then flip them back down!

2. Mythic Guardian Boss Fights

Hidden within the 100 tiles are 4 Guardian Runes. When both halves of a Guardian Rune are flipped, a Mythic Guardian enters the battlefield!

  • All players halt normal turns to engage in a cooperative or competitive Boss Clash.
  • Players use their accumulated Vault tiles to deal damage to the Guardian.
  • The Archmage who lands the killing strike claims the Guardian’s Relic, granting game-breaking passive abilities for the remainder of the match.

Game Modes

Magic Memory accommodates various play styles through three distinct gameplay modes:

Mode A: Duel of Mages (Standard Competitive - 2 to 4 Players)

The ultimate battle royale. Players compete to drain rival Archmages' HP to zero OR be the first to collect 10 total matching pairs in their Vault.

Mode B: Solitary Archmage (Solo Mode - 1 Player)

Face off against the automated Shadow Mind AI Deck. The Shadow Mind automatically flips 2 random tiles per turn. If it matches, it steals the pair and unleashes corruption across the board. You must clear 80% of the grid before the Shadow Mind corrupts all 7 Elemental Fountains.

Mode C: Archmage Academies (Cooperative Team Mode - 2v2)

Teammates sit opposite each other and share a combined Health Pool of 150 HP. Players can non-verbally signal tile locations using team-assigned Arcane Gesture Tokens, adding a thrilling layer of tacit team communication.

Key Strategies for Victory

  1. Spatial Mapping: Don't just try to remember isolated tiles—mentally grid the board into coordinates (e.g., Row 3, Column 4 = Fire Rune 8).
  2. Tactical Flashing: Intentionally miss a turn on a known tile to bait an opponent into revealing a dangerous combo, then punish them on your next turn.
  3. Mana Management: Keep at least 5 MP in reserve at all times so you can cast defensive shields when opponents unleash Pyromancy attacks.
  4. Denial Play: If you notice an opponent collecting Chronomancy pairs to form a Master Spell, prioritize snatching the remaining Time Runes even if they don't immediately benefit your elemental build.

Winning the Game

In standard play, a game of Magic Memory ends immediately when one of two conditions is met:

  1. Total Arcane Supremacy: An Archmage reduces all rival players' HP to 0 through elemental spell casting and direct attacks.
  2. The Final Unsealing: All 100 tiles are cleared from the Arcane Grid. The player with the highest combined score calculated from Vault Pairs (10 pts each), Remaining HP (1 pt per 2 HP), and Unspent Victory Mana (1 pt per 2 MP) is crowned the Master of the Arcane Mind! """
